Third Karachi Literary Festival (KLF)

The Third Karachi Literary Festival (KLF) will be held at a local hotel on February 11 and 12. The event is being jointly organized by the Oxford University Press (OUP) Pakistan and British Council.

An announcement to this effect was made at a briefing by the Managing Director of OUP Pakistan, Ms. Ameena Saiyid. It was pointed out that the KLF is a reflection of Pakistan’s historical roots as expressed in a multiplicity of languages and in various forms of writing. At the same time it serves to highlight the contemporary context.

The festival also seeks to broaden the picture and counter-balance the negative depiction of society in Pakistan by celebrating the diversity and dynamism of this society. Asif Farrukhi, literary critic, along with Martin Fryer, Director Programmes, British Council Pakistan, and Shreela Ghosh, Director Arts, British Council South Asia, were also present on the occasion.

Ms. Ameena Saiyid said that through dialogue and discussion, readings and renderings, the Festival is intended to create an intellectual space in which the diversity and pluralism in Pakistan’s society is expressed by authors from traditions both within and beyond Pakistan’s borders. She said that the festival allows these writers to be freely accessible to people in an open and participatory manner.

KARACHI, Pakistan (Oct. 9) – Karachi Fashion Week Oct. 6-9, 2011: Today is the final day of the Karachi Fashion Week’s third edition for Spring/Summer 2012 collection being organised by the Excellent Events and Entertainment (Triple-E) under the Pakistan Fashion Council (PFC), with support from both the International and National Chapter Pakistan of the World Fashion Organization (WFO).

Several celebrities and designers appreciated the healthy activity and termed it the need of the hour so as to encourage not only local designers at the international level but also to support Pakistan’s export sector. In the present situation, especially in Karachi, they termed the event as a “breath of fresh air”.

At least 32 Pakistani and International designers and 70 Pakistani male and female models, are participating in the four-day “Fashion Week”.

Quaid-e-Azam addressed the participants at the dinner party given by Mr Ghulam Hussain Hidayatullah at the Karachi Club on August 9, 1947.

Quaid-e-Azam proudly revealed saying, “Yes, I am Karachi-born, and it was the sands of Karachi that I played marbles in my boyhood, I was schooled at Karachi”.

He further added, “Let us judge by results, not by theories. With the help of every section – I see that every class is represented in this huge gathering – let us work in double shift, if necessary, to make the sovereign State of Pakistan really happy, relly united and really powerful”.

At the end of his address, Quaid-e-Azam acknowledged the help and assistance he got from his younger sister Fatima Jinnah. He said, “Miss Fatima Jinnah is a constant source of help and encouragement for me. In the days when I was expecting to be taken as aprisioner by the British Government, it was my sister who encouraged me, and said hopeful things when revolution was starting me in the face. Her constant care is about my health”

Karachi is the largest city and former capital of Pakistan on the Arabian Sea near the Indus River delta. The capital of Sindh province, it is Pakistan's chief seaport and industrial center. Karachi is not just a city. It is a unique city in many ways.

From a medium-size city of less than 500,000 population in 1947 it grew to well over five million in 1981 and, according to most conservative estimates, has now exceeded 10 million mark. The area of Karcahi divison is about 3,366 sq. km with more than 18 towns and 6 cantonment boards.

KARACHI - - HISTORY IN BRIEF

One day she will be the Queen of the East", said Charles Napier a hundred year ago about Karachi. It was then only a small village. Today Karachi bursts upon the visitor as a vast commercial and industrial center, a sea of people teeming with human activity, its population having already exceeded nine million mark and still growing.

This metropolitan city of Karachi was until 1725 A.D. just a barren piece of land , washed on three sides by the blue waters of the Arabian Sea. A few fishermen lived in a small huts on the sunny creek. There was a pool of water on this barren piece of land which was known as Kalachi-jo-Kun. Kalachi was the name of fisherman whereas kun meant a deep kitch. Therefore, "Kalachi-jo-Kun" meant the deep ditch of Kalacahi, the fisherman.
